چکیده

At the close of the nineteenth and the commencement of the twentieth century, socialism began to gain momentum as a large-scale movement in Europe and the United States. This popularity was supported by an increased influence of the working class in society, which put pressure for representation upon European parliaments and began to secure concrete improvements in labor protection laws. Moreover, socialist proponents looked hopefully towards the living example of the Soviet Union, which began its socialist experiment in 1917 following the success of the Bolshevik Revolution. Socialism, which found its economic grounding in the legacies of such men as David Ricardo and Karl Marx, tended to encourage a more central and vital role for government intervention in the economy. Thus economists who favored a socialist-oriented change in contemporary societies began to develop theories intended to address such issues as “where, when and how the state should intervene in economic life” and how societies might be successfully reorganized so as to be based upon these new precepts. Information and Economics

In a series of recent writings we have sought to re-open a debate over the economics of socialism. We have argued that the collapse of the Soviet system does not necessitate the conclusion that all forms of socialist economy are doomed to inefficiency. Updating and extending a line of reasoning found in Lange (1967) and Johansen (1977),1 we have claimed that modern information technology permit...

ON KNOWLEDGE AND INFORMATION IN ECONOMICS Information , the Tip of the Tacit Iceberg

“IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN KNOWLEDGE AND information?” is the question that participants in this symposium were asked to address. I come to the question as an historian of economic thought who has studied the Austrian tradition, and in particular the contributions of F.A. Hayek, who is remembered among information theorists for his early writings on “the knowledge problem.” An analysis of h...

Institutional Analysis in the Socialist Calculation Debate

This paper asserts that economists of the mid twentieth century developed two methods of analyzing institutions. Austrian and Coasean economists developed complementary approaches to institutional analysis. Coase developed a research program of Comparative Institutional Analysis, whereby economists compare alternative institutions according to their most similar features. Ludwig von Mises and F...

Has John Roemer Resurrected Market Socialism ?

ohn E. Roemer, a leading socialist economist, has recently proclaimed a “Future for Socialism” (Roemer 1994). His book is advertised as being “measured, highly accessible, and most of all compelling.” I have come to the opposite conclusions. Roemer’s most provocative assertion is his claim to have found “ways of reformulating the concept of market socialism in response to the Hayekian critique”...

Economics Discussion Paper 2012-6 REVISITING THE SOCIALIST CALCULATION DEBATE: THE ROLE OF MARKETS AND FINANCE IN HAYEK’S RESPONSE TO LANGE’S CHALLENGE

In the early twentieth century, a range of writers produced visions of a socialist economy whose distinguishing characteristic was an allocation of resources using a ‘technical’ perspective. In the 1930s, Oskar Lange took up the challenge of Ludwig von Mises’ claim of the ‘impossibility’ of constructing a socialist economy on such an engineering basis. He readily acceded to the need for efficie...
